Mission

Unleashing biological insights with omics.

Roll Roll Bio Ltd is an independent consulting firm based in Edmonton, AB, Canada. With roots in experimental microbiology and a decade of experience in computational biology, we bring a unique combination of wet-lab intuition and computational expertise to deliver tailored solutions across research and industry.

In addition to bringing deep domain knowledge in microbial research, we are passionate about building transparent, reproducible, and scalable data workflows to help our partners glean insights from biological data to make informed decisions. We have demonstrated success in integrating omics datasets with complex metadata to understand microbial evolution, monitor the spread of antibiotic resistance in healthcare networks, improve fermentation performance at lab and commercial scales, and identify novel enzymes for biodegradation.

While our roots are in the life sciences, our data engineering and analytical capabilities extend to any sector where data-driven decisions matter.

Services

We are not just here to run your data through the right bioinformatic pipelines. We are also here to understand your vision, your infrastructure, and your experiments, so we can build a dynamic solution that delivers on your goals. Here are some examples of our work:

  • Data infrastructure engineering
Committed to best practices in data stewardship, we architected and implemented a cloud-based data system on AWS, encompassing reproducible bioinformatics pipelines, backend databases, and an interactive frontend dashboard. We are proficient in modern software delivery practices (e.g., CI/CD, containerization with Docker, and version-controlled collaboration via GitHub) and bioinformatics workflow development with Nextflow.
  • Deep learning for biological applications
To narrow the search for promising candidates and improve gene expression, we evaluated state-of-the-art deep learning tools for protein function prediction and codon optimization, reproducing and adapting published methods to make actionable recommendations to stakeholders and accelerate experimental efficiency.
  • Omics applications in fermentation
We applied variant calling and metagenomics to monitor bioreactor health from lab through pilot to commercial scale, including in-depth characterization to support regulatory and customer requirements. We also leveraged transcriptomics and proteomics to identify metabolic engineering targets for improving product yield.
  • Genomics-based pathogen surveillance
Antibiotic resistance is endemic in nursing homes. By integrating whole-genome sequencing with patient transfer data, we pinpointed inter-facility transfers as a major transmission route, informing the need for coordinated efforts across regional healthcare facilities to disrupt the spread of antibiotic-resistant pathogensref.
  • Gut microbiome in infection prevention and control
Antibiotic use in nursing homes can disrupt patient gut microbiomes, creating opportunities for pathogen colonization. Working alongside clinicians and staff, we profiled patient gut microbiomes using 16S rRNA sequencing to trace the link between antibiotic exposure and pathogen burden, identifying antibiotic stewardship and patient hand hygiene as key intervention targets to reduce transmission within facilitiesref.
  • Comparative genomics
Using long-read sequencing technology, we assembled and annotated the genomes of closely related microbial strains to identify genetic features uniquely present in pathogenic mycobacteria as potential diagnostic markersref.
